Panel Discussion in Remembrance of Hamida Barmaki

Colleagues and family members meet in Graz

On 12 May 2015, the European Training and Research Centre for Human Rights (ETC) held an event in remembrance of Associate Professor Hamida Barmaki, the former leader of the Max Planck team in Kabul who was killed along with her entire immediate family in an attack at the start of 2011. Participants included the director of the ETC Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Benedek, the lawyer Petra Leschanz (SOMM Graz), Hamida Barmaki’s sister Dr. Abeda Sakha, her parents and other relatives. The Foundation’s managing director Dr. Tilmann Röder gave a lecture about children’s rights in Afghanistan – an area in which, as a human rights activist, Hamida was particularly engaged in before her death and one in which the Max Planck Foundation is still active today.
