Max Planck Foundation hosts high-level roundtable with the Constitutional Court and the Court of Cassation in Amman, Jordan
The two-day workshop was inaugurated on 25 September 2017 by Birgitta Siefker-Eberle, Ambassador of Germany to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and Siraj Khan, Country Manager - Jordan, at the Max Planck Foundation. Judge Dr. Noman al-Khateeb delivered his opening remarks on behalf of the President of the Constitutional Court and Judge Mohammed al-Ajarmeh delivered an opening address on behalf of the Chief Justice and President of the Court of Cassation.
The Roundtable was the culmination of a series of separate workshops hosted with judges from both institutions and the first roundtable, which took place in Heidelberg in October 2016. Judges from both courts actively presented and responded on topics grounded in the provisions of the Law of the Constitutional Court, the Constitution and procedural rules which regulate the procedural and substantive considerations and referral of cases from the ordinary courts and the Court of Cassation, up to the Constitutional Court.
Judge Dr. Adel Omar Sherif, Vice-President of the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) of Egypt, was invited to the roundtable as an expert to provide a practical and comparative perspective from his vast experience at the SCC in Egypt.
The Roundtable is a significant component of the Max Planck Foundation's project on 'Strengthening the Constitutional System of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan', generously funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. The project aims to enhance clarity and cooperation between, and build the capacities of, the judicial institutions within the constitutional and regulatory framework in accordance with their respective mandates, in an effort to support the overall constitutional justice system in Jordan.
