Support to the Somali Constitutional Review and Implementation Process

Max Planck Foundation starts a new two-year support project

Building on a long-standing and fruitful cooperation between the Somali Federal Parliament and the Max Planck Foundation, the Foundation started a new two-year support project funded by the European Union on the implementation and review of the Somali Provisional Constitution. Apart from the continued technical legal support to the relevant Somali stakeholders of the constitutional review and implementation process, the project also expands to include regular capacity building workshops for government officials on topics of Somali constitutional law.

Following the coming into force of the Provisional Constitution of Somalia on 2 August 2012, the Foundation has been working closely with the Somali institutions tasked with the implementation and the review of the Somali Provisional Constitution. These institutions include the Somali Provisional Constitution Review and Implementation Oversight Committee of the House of the People of the Somali Federal Parliament (Oversight Committee) and other parliamentary committees.

The Oversight Committee is mandated with preparing and leading the constitutional review and implementation process as provided for in Article 133 of the Provisional Constitution of Somalia. The Max Planck Foundation has been supporting the Oversight Committee since June 2013 by facilitating the analysis and discussion of the Somali Provisional Constitution.
