The Accountability and Integrity Matters (AIM) project comprises several components implemented by different partners, with the Max Planck Foundation contributing to it as a key implementation partner on the justice-focused segment. The project, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the European Union (EU), seeks to support the Maldivian Government in achieving a robust legal framework and enhanced institutional capacities. The Foundation is providing support to the Attorney General’s Office and other key State institutions in the development, review and implementation of draft legislation, procedural and policy reforms and capacity building. These efforts aim to improve laws and the institutional capacity of the justice sector, aligned with international standards. To support a more inclusive, transparent and coordinated law-making process, the Foundation seeks to assist in the institutionalisation of legal drafting mechanisms, including multi-stakeholder consultations. Specific project components implemented by the Foundation seek to contribute to the development of a more efficient and accessible legal aid system, in particular for disadvantaged population groups.  Complementing this work, the Foundation also aims to support one of the project’s key components: the development of an improved legal framework to combat corruption and support the institutional efforts. Overall, building on its established relationships with key institutions in the Maldives, such as the Attorney General’s Office, the Bar Council of the Maldives and the Department of Judicial Administration, the AIM project allows the Foundation to continue to provide technical legal support in the areas of legislative drafting and judicial education.
