Overview

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine has been through a difficult process of transformation. In the last 15 years, the country has experienced two revolutions – the Orange Revolution between November 2004 and January 2005 and then the Euromaidan in February 2014. Following the invasion and occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in March 2014, Ukraine has been involved in an armed conflict in Donbas in the east of the country. The challenge of corruption, the weakness of public institutions, the lack of society’s confidence in the justice sector shaped the overall picture. At the same time, important reforms have been implemented in recent years and some positive changes are taking place in the public sector. What is also encouraging, the Ukrainian civil society is getting stronger and much more proactive.

The Foundation currently supports capacity building for the Coordination Centre for Legal Aid Provision, its regional centres and local offices, closely cooperating with the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights as well. The Foundation’s current project aims to improve the quality of legal assistance provided to IDPs to enhance their effective access to justice and administrative services. The previous project implemented in 2016 aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights to promote the principle of equality and non-discrimination. The Foundation provided assistance to the Commissioner’s Office in the implementation of the Human Rights Strategy.

Alongside project-based work, the Foundation’s staff takes part in international conferences on Ukraine and is engaged in academic research and analysis dealing with the current developments in the country.
