Overview

Nicaragua’s unresolved problems include its low level of development, high levels of corruption and the weakness of state institutions. In April 2018, the government announced a reform of social security that would have led to higher pension contributions and lower pay. As a result, there were mass protests, supported not only by young people and students but also by the church and parts of the business community. Nicaragua’s economy has slumped since the protests erupted, and the country is suffering from a decline in international investment. All attempts at mediation have failed so far, and the country needs a renewal of the culture of peace and its social contract.
