Advance Publication: Volume 29 of the Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law Now Available Online

Volume 29 of the Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law (UNYB) is set to be published in print early next year. This edition will feature a special thematic forum titled ‘Rethinking the Notion of “Territory” in International Law’, which will include contributions that critically engage with questions on whether international law’s understanding of “territory” —as a legal and political construct—remains fit for purpose in responding to the complex realities of the twenty-first century, or if a significant rethinking of the concept is needed to remain relevant.

Some of the articles featured in Volume 29 of the UNYB are now available online as advance publications ahead of the full volume, and can be accessed here, via subscription. These address topics such as rethinking territory through the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) Advisory Opinion on Climate Change and reassessing consent in international law amid territorial disputes; they include open-access contributions on understanding the centrality of territory through the prohibition of annexations, territory in international trade law and reconceptualizing territory through its accessibility and purposivity. The advance publications also include articles from the general section of the Yearbook, exploring topics such as United Nation immunities, the regulation of AI-warships, and the role of the ICJ and the United Nations Security Council in addressing counter-terrorism. The abstracts of all the advance articles are freely accessible on the Brill website.

Further information regarding the full publication of all the content from Volume 29 will follow in the months ahead. In case you would like to write a contribution for consideration of publication in the Yearbook, please refer to our submission guidelines, found here.
