Stabilising the Rule of Law by Supporting the Reform Agenda of the Republic of Maldives
In October 2019, President Solih’s Office introduced an ambitious Strategic Action Plan for the years 2019 – 2023, detailing the national development agenda and proposing numerous reforms, including promoting accountability, respect for the rule of law and legislative and judicial reform.
Building on the previous “Strengthening the Rule of Law in the Maldives” project, this project aims to support this reform agenda by technical legal assistance, capacity building and promoting collaboration between actors in the legal system of the Maldives.
The project seeks to achieve this objective in two ways. Firstly, it will strengthen the knowledge and skills of staff of institutions involved in the law-making process, including the Attorney General’s Office, Ministers and Staff of Line Ministries, Members of the People’s Majlis and their Secretarial Staff and Civil Society Organisations, while also seeking to enhance coordination between these actors to streamline legislative processes and promote democratic reform. Secondly, the project will also support the judicial reform agenda and seek to enhance access to justice in the Maldives by building the capacity of target groups including the police, the Prosecutor General’s Office and legal professionals offering pro bono legal services; encouraging knowledge-sharing between members of the Judiciary; and empowering the effective monitoring of measures introduced to bring about access to justice in the Maldives.
The overall objective which this project aims to achieve is to strengthen the rule of law in the Maldives by supporting the national reform agenda in order to contribute to the overall stabilisation of the country.
