Combating Piracy and Strengthening Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea – Seminars for Togolese Security Experts

Due to the increase of piracy off the coast of West Africa, maritime trade in the Gulf of Guinea is in danger. Therefore, it is …

… important to strengthen the capacity of relevant national authorities concerning the applicable international and national regulatory framework to combat piracy. Through the course of several seminars, the Max Planck Foundation familiarised security experts from several Togolese ministries on international law as well as national anti-piracy legislation from a comparative perspective. In addition to the analysis of the applicable legislation, the focus of the seminars was on the efforts of neighbouring States and on the completion of regional agreements to effectively combat piracy and maritime terrorism.

This first seminar of the series took place in October 2013 in Lomé, Togo.
