Max Planck Foundation Initiates Assistance to the College of Law, University of Juba

Official Hand Over of First European Union-Funded Endowment of Legal Texts to the Library of the College of Law

On 31 May 2019, the Foundation officially handed over an initial consignment of legal texts to the College of Law of the University of Juba. The Acting Dean of the College of Law, Mr Elfaki Chol Lual, accompanied by the Deputy Dean and Heads of Departments at the College, took delivery of the books supplied.

The legal texts were on a range of topics – including Islamic Law, Law of Torts and Family Law – which were specifically requested by the faculty of the College of Law. Additionally, the titles of the texts supplied to the library of the College of Law were jointly agreed upon by both parties, as was foreseen by the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the parties.

With this delivery, the Foundation initiated the provision of technical assistance to the College of Law foreseen within the framework of the project Strengthening the Rule of Law in South Sudan. This cooperation involves the provision of technical legal assistance to the College of Law. Additional assistance will be provided by the Foundation in the provision of further consignments to the College of Law, as well as a series of Guest Lectures to the students of the College.

This cooperation with the College of Law of the University of Juba constitutes one component of the project Strengthening the Rule of Law in South Sudan (2017-2020), which is being implemented with the generous financial assistance of the European Union. The project aims to provide technical assistance and legal capacity building to key rule of law actors in South Sudan, including the Judiciary, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, the University of Juba, and various other justice sector stakeholders.
