Max Planck Foundation renews cooperation with the highest court in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Constitutional Court of Jordan and the Max Planck Foundation

On 12 December 2017, the Max Planck Foundation renewed its cooperation with the Constitutional Court of Jordan, the highest court in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

The Memorandum of Understanding renews the cooperation between the Max Planck Foundation and the Constitutional Court, which the Max Planck Foundation has supported since 2014 with technical legal expertise to build the technical capacity of the judges of the Court and to build their capacity on constitutional jurisprudence.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Dr. Mustafa al-Nawaiseh, Secretary General of the Constitutional Court of Jordan, and the Head of the Jordan Project at the Max Planck Foundation. The signing ceremony followed a cordial meeting with, and in the presence of Taher Hikmat, President of the Constitutional Court of Jordan. The Memorandum of Understanding provides for cooperation between the Constitutional Court and the Max Planck Foundation until the end of 2019.

The renewed cooperation provides for a series of activities with the Court focusing on the substantive and procedural interaction between the Constitutional Court and ordinary courts, the application of international law by constitutional courts and an in-depth analysis of the jurisprudence of Constitutional Courts from a comparative perspective.

The cooperation with the Constitutional Court is one of the main components of the Max Planck Foundation’s project on ‘Raising Technical Capacity and Technical Knowledge of Judges of the Constitutional Court and Ordinary Courts in Jordan (2017-2019)’, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. The project aims to enhance the capacity of judicial and legal institutions in Jordan on constitutional jurisprudence, substantive and procedural interaction between the Constitutional Court and ordinary courts, and the application of international law by Jordanian courts.
