The Foundation’s Managing Director meets with Sri Lankan Task Force on Maritime Governance

Professor Rüdiger Wolfrum held a meeting with Sri Lankan officials on oceans governance.

On 27 and 28 September 2018, the Foundation’s Managing Director, Professor Rüdiger Wolfrum, met with Sri Lankan officials to discuss maritime governance in the Indian Ocean. The two-day meeting focused on areas of regional cooperation to maintain peace, stability and continued development between Indian Ocean States.

Presentations were made by the Foundation team to define and outline the legal framework of maritime safety and security, as well as on the sustainable management of living resources in the ocean. This was followed by discussion that highlighted practical examples of good practice and problematic areas, especially in the Indian Ocean.

The meeting was held in advance of the upcoming Track 1.5 dialogue hosted by Sri Lanka on 11 and 12 October 2018 entitled ‘The Indian Ocean: Defining Our Future’. The Track 1.5 dialogue is part of the Sri Lankan Prime Minister’s agenda to improve maritime governance in the Indian Ocean.
