The Foundation meets with key stakeholders across the legal system in Myanmar

Consultations held to advance cooperation on rule of law support

From 10 to 14 February 2020, the Max Planck Foundation held meetings with various stakeholders from the justice sector in Yangon and Naypyidaw, Myanmar. The objective of the consultations was to identify and outline the current and potential future legal needs within the justice sector, specifically regarding to promoting, fostering and maintaining the rule of law as one of the key cornerstones to democracy.

In particular, the Foundation met with esteemed representatives of the Supreme Court of Myanmar and Members of the Union Legal Aid Board, as well as the Members of the Constitutional Tribunal of Myanmar and Attorney General. The Foundation was delighted to hear about multiple reform efforts to advance the rule of law, including the Supreme Court’s Judicial Strategic Plan.

The findings from the consultations will initiate development of a complementary programme as part of the project, “Reinforcing the Capacity of the Judiciary in Myanmar” funded by the Chubb Rule of Law Fund 2020.
