Foundation provides legal literature to the People’s Majlis Secretariat and the Bar Council, Maldives

On 15 November 2021, on two separate occasions the Foundation officially handed over numerous textbooks in the Maldives.

Numerous textbooks on the topic of legislative drafting were handed over to Secretariat staff of the People’s Majlis. The books cover a range of topics from cutting edge drafting techniques to comparative studies of legislative processes around the world, as well as guides for effective public participation. The provision of legal literature aims to encourage use of the knowledge and skills explored during three legislative drafting workshops which the Foundation held with legislative drafters from the People’s Majlis Secretariat.

At a second event the Foundation officially handed over numerous textbooks to supplement the Bar Council’s existing library. The books cover a range of topics from legal ethics to commentaries on international human rights law treaties and studies of approaches to strategic litigation. The provision of legal literature aims to support the Bar Council in their research tasks and the design of activities to further the rule of law, access to justice and human rights in the Maldives. Books were selected based on topics of interest which arose during the numerous workshops that the Foundation conducted in collaboration with the Bar Council over the last two years.

The provision of these books forms part of the Foundation’s now-completed “Strengthening the Rule of Law in the Maldives” project. Delivery was initially delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
