Afghan women judges share experiences and hopes in Afghanistan Legal Research Network’s monthly symposium

In partnership with the International Association of Women Judges, the Foundation hosted a symposium with former Afghan women judges.

On 22 July 2022, the Afghanistan Legal Research Network at the Max Planck Foundation held its seventh symposium comprising of two panels of former Afghan women judges.

The first panelists shared their experiences as members of the pioneering generations of women judges in Afghanistan, from security threats and discussions within their families down to the larger changes they themselves observed in society.

The next panel focused on the future of Afghanistan and the judges who lost office, expressing grave concerns for the safety of their colleagues who still reside in Afghanistan, but also hopes for a better future in the country.

The symposium was part of a series hosted by the Afghanistan Legal Research Network at the Max Planck Foundation within the project ‘Afghanistan and the Rule of Law after 2021: Legal and Social Developments’ funded by the German Foreign Office.
