On 8 February 2024, Professor Rahul Mukherji, Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science at the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University, delivered a presentation at the Max Planck Foundation on the topic of India’s Democracy – The Competitive Authoritarian Propensity, as a part of the Foundation’s ‘Perspectives’ Lecture Series.
During the presentation, Professor Mukherji discussed authoritarian trends in India, and its effect particularly on public institutions and civil society organisations operating in India. The lecture was based on Professor Mukherji’s recent publications found in Pacific Affairs, Journal of Democracy and The Hindu. Professor Mukherji concluded the presentation by discussing possible routes for democratic consolidation in the country based on his field of research and experiences.
The lecture was followed by a lively question and answer session, where Professor Mukherji engaged with the Research Fellows at the Foundation on his presentation, broader experiences, and the work of the Foundation.
