Foundation organises Second Roundtable on the “Code of Judicial Conduct” for the Judiciary of South Sudan

The Foundation successfully organised a second roundtable to finalise the ongoing review of the Code of Judicial Conduct for the Judiciary of South Sudan. The three-day roundtable was held in Juba, South Sudan, from 9th to 11th October, with selected members of the Judiciary of South Sudan.

The second roundtable built on the progress made in the initial roundtable, which was held in Juba in May 2024. During both roundtables, selected members from the Judiciary of South Sudan deliberated on the recommendations for amending the Judiciary’s Code of Conduct, which were based on statements made by Justices and Judges of South Sudan’s Judiciary during previously held workshops on judicial ethics in South Sudan. Through a candid discussion, the two roundtables sought to crystallise these recommendations into potential revisions of South Sudan’s current Code of Judicial Conduct for the Judiciary to make the Code speak better to South Sudan’s circumstances.

The roundtable was attended by senior members of South Sudan’s Judiciary, including the Deputy Chief Justice, Hon. Dr John Gatwech Lul and the Head of Training of the Judiciary of South Sudan and Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Dr Benjamin Baak Deng. The selected members of the Judiciary who attended the roundtable were drawn from various levels of South Sudan’s Judiciary including the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court and various lower-level courts.

This roundtable was implemented with the generous financial assistance of the European Union within the framework of the project ‘Supporting Constitution-Making, Legal Harmonisation and Judicial Reform in South Sudan’.
