First workshop with the Supreme Constitutional Court of Palestine on Constitutional Jurisprudence
On 14-15 March 2018, the Max Planck Foundation delivered a two-day workshop on ‘Competences and Jurisprudence of Constitutional Courts from a Comparative Perspective’. The technical content of the workshop focused on the roles and functions of contemporary constitutional courts, the jurisdiction and competences of the Palestinian, Egyptian, Jordanian and various European Constitutional Courts. The workshop also discussed the jurisprudence of these courts on issues related to their respective jurisdictional questions and competences and the various modes of interpretation that are applied in constitutional jurisprudence from a practical perspective.
The workshop was attended by all eight Members of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Palestine, including H.E., Dr. Mohammad al-Haj Qasem, President of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Palestine, and 5 Members of the Constitutional Court Jordan. Vice-Presidents of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt, Dr. Abdel Aziz Salman and Dr. Tarek Shebl participated in the workshop as international experts and presented their expertise on the jurisdiction, competences and jurisprudence of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt. The workshop was brought to a close by H.E., Ambassador Birgitta Siefker-Eberle, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Jordan, who highlighted the importance of the workshop and the overall project for the development of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Palestine and of the Constitutional Court of Jordan.
The cooperation with the Supreme Constitutional Court of Palestine is one component of the Max Planck Foundation’s project on ‘Raising Technical Capacity and Technical Knowledge of Judges of the Constitutional Court (Jordan and Palestine) and Judges of Ordinary Courts in Jordan (2017-2019)’.
