The project entitled ‘Strengthening the reach and accessibility of constitutional justice in Mauritania’ strives to strengthen the constitutional justice system in the country, increase women’s access to justice and promote a rule of law culture in civil society.
In the framework of the project, the Max Planck Foundation is providing technical legal support in the form of capacity-building workshops and legal advice to the Constitutional Council of Mauritania in order to sustain its enhanced efforts in the development of a line of jurisprudence that is protective of fundamental rights and freedoms and to strengthen its capacities in areas linked to the Council’s constitutional mandate.
Concomitantly, the project adopts a bottom-up approach in favour of representatives of Mauritanian civil society in a bid to promote the rule of law, enhanced constitutionalism and fundamental rights protection in Mauritanian society. Thereby, the project includes the delivery of workshops specifically dedicated to women’s rights in order to improve women’s access to justice in Mauritania and to increase their participation and inclusion in a democratic society.
The project also targets a wider audience in Africa and beyond through the publication and dissemination of an analysis of a selection of landmark cases on women’s rights in Africa from both international and African regional bodies, as well as African constitutional courts.
The two-year project (2024-26) is generously funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
