The Foundation participates in a law of the sea webinar on deep seabed mining
On 15 October 2020, the Max Planck Foundation took part in a webinar on “the role of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and State Practices in regulating Deep Seabed Mining”, organised by the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime and Investment Affairs of Indonesia and facilitated by the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum.
Professor Rüdiger Wolfrum, one of the Foundation’s Managing Directors, also former Judge and President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), delivered his keynote speech on the principles governing the seabed regime under international law, and on the role of States, including small-island States, in the Area.
Contributions on the ISA regulatory framework and on the current status of deep-seabed exploration and exploitation activities were made by Professor Tri Widodo (Deputy Minister of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs), HE Ambassador Solo Mara (Secretary General of Pacific Island Development Forum), Professor Gusman (Vice Dean, Faculty of Law, Padjadjaran University), and the Foundation staff.
Discussions were moderated by Mardiah R. Muhammad (BBNJ Negotiator/Legal Advisor at the Indonesian MoFA).
The event was attended by over 200 participants from all over the world and built upon a collaboration started between the Foundation and the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs back in 2019.
