Foundation meets with Uzbek stakeholders in Tashkent

The Max Planck Foundation’s on-the-ground research contributed to a holistic understanding of the current legal landscape.

From 22 to 24 May 2023, Foundation staff spoke with various state and non-state interlocutors regarding prosecution, rehabilitation, and reintegration of those affected by the foreign fighter phenomenon in Uzbekistan.

These consultations provided the Foundation with greater insight into the state’s current laws, policies, and practices relating to returnees from conflict zones, as well as into the work of other local and international stakeholders.

The Foundation will build upon the research conducted during this visit in future meetings with state institutions geared toward identifying goals and priorities for the augmentation of Uzbek prosecution, rehabilitation and reintegration practices in line with international law. Ultimately, Foundation staff endeavours to assist the Uzbek state in strengthening these practices through the provision of specialised technical legal advice.

The meetings were part of the project Prosecution, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration of Returning Foreign Fighters and their Families, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
